The Evolution of Technology

Technology has forever changed the way we go about our daily lives. Whether it’s using computers to type our latest paper, Skype family in far away places or simply check in with friends on Facebook, technology has changed life drastically. Back in the 90’s when technology had not progressed as it has today, no such thing as social media really existed other then email which was a way of quicker communication. Otherwise, there wasn’t anyway to share a relationship status, or a tweet or an instagram photo. As a child, I do remember having a huge box computer, one that probably was state of the art. It had pinball and all of these card games which I thought were quite amazing at the time. The computer even had a camera we could to video chat, I believe. Now, cameras are built into portable computers, we can Skype at a moments notice, and not even with computers but with phones, and tablets.

Today the word “computer” has taken on many meanings. When someone says computer, they could be referring to a tablet, iPod, iPhone, or a laptop. Each of these are a sort of mini computer. Even game systems are in some way a computer, using servers to connect gamers to play against another, which seems to be pretty amazing. Technology has gained the reputation of making people lazy and less social. Technology may seem to make people less social, and lazy but personally I would have to disagree. Technology certainly can have its drawbacks but there are so many areas that it has made life easier. Instead of lazy, I like to use the word efficient. People can chat over oceans in seconds, information that could be crucial can be spread across the globe in minutes. Papers and reports can be finished quicker, can be spell checked with technology. Each of these are examples of more efficient methods with the use of technology. Growing up in the 90’s and early 00’s, even though I have only vague recollections, technology was much larger and always had cords or wires. Now, everything is wireless and almost every thing is handheld. Game systems were not nearly as advanced. The Ps2 used to be the most advanced, and coolest system with the best graphics ever. What is out now puts all those claims to rest.

The advancement of technology is astronomical now compared to 17 years ago. Every few years a new phone or a new computer may come out. Today, each 6 months there is some new computer, phone, camera etc. Its impressive how much new technology is released in a year. I believe with all the new technology released, it gives us new methods and ways to create better, more efficient technology and ways to improve society.
